Meeting Room 336.A-B
This session is for anyone who wants to know more about the commissioning process, from the point of view of either composer or commissioner. From personal experience, composer David Ashley White will discuss a variety of topics: particular circumstances surrounding some of his numerous commissions; what other composers and writers consider when deciding to accept a commission, including their method of determining a fee; and any questions about the general topic from those in attendance, especially those who are considering undertaking a commissioning project.
David Ashley White, Professor of Composition at the Moores School of Music, University of Houston, served as director of the school from 1999-2014. His secular and sacred compositions are widely performed and published, and he regularly receives commissions from various organizations, schools, churches and individuals. White’s hymns are found in various denominational books, including The Hymnal 1982 (Episcopal); The United Methodist Hymnal; and Glory to God: The Presbyterian Hymnal. His vocal and instrumental music is recorded on a number of commercial labels—the most recent example being As you set out for Ithaka, a selection of secular works (Troy [Albany] Records 1419).
